Beard oil vs beard butter: here's the difference

Growing and maintaining a beard isn’t complicated, but it can seem that way to someone just starting out. There are so many products on the market, and at face value, they can all seem pretty similar. But every beard care solution has its own unique purpose. Knowing those purposes helps you create a custom beard care routine that fits the needs of your whiskers. Today, Kingsmen, we’re talking about the differences between beard oil and beard butter.

What is beard oil?

Beard oil is used almost exclusively for nourishment and moisturizing. Some contain fragrance, but their main purpose is to keep your beard healthy. Regular use replaces natural oils lost during washing, moisturizing both your skin and beard hairs. Beard oil doesn’t give much hold—maybe a few flyaways—but it absorbs completely to deliver deep hydration directly to the follicles.

What is beard butter?

Beard butter provides moisture like beard oil but also adds light styling capability. Its thicker consistency prevents full absorption, allowing it to shape and condition your beard throughout the day. Used with beard oil, it adds another layer of hydration. Applied overnight, it works as a deep-conditioning treatment.

How do I use beard oil?

Start with a damp beard. Use only a few drops—too much will leave your beard greasy. Rub the oil between your hands, making sure to coat your fingertips so you can reach the roots of each hair. Work the oil from roots to ends, smooth your beard lightly, and then work the product into your mustache. Allow at least five minutes for full absorption before applying additional products.

With a clean, dry beard, take a dime-sized amount of beard butter and warm it between your hands. Work it through your beard while shaping and styling. Follow with your beard brush, then lightly smooth with your palms. Reapply as needed throughout the day, keeping in mind that beard butter does not fully absorb and can build up over time.

When do I use beard oil?

Use beard oil every morning without fail. It is the most important step for beard health. Apply after your morning shower once you've towel-dried your beard. If you haven’t showered, dampen your beard with warm water before applying. Reapply throughout the day if dryness occurs.

When do I use beard butter?

Use beard butter when you need light hold or want to tame flyaways. It is also excellent as an overnight deep-conditioning treatment, allowing your beard to absorb moisture for hours.

Beard Oil vs. Beard Butter

While both products offer hydration, beard oil is designed to absorb fully, whereas beard butter is not. Beard butter provides light hold and can act as a conditioning mask. Beard oil is essential daily; beard butter can be added as needed.
